Get to know Paraty

The result of the incredible natural combination of sea, islands, mountain ranges, waterfalls and Atlantic rainforest make the scenario of Paraty one of the most important destinations for tourists on the Brazilian coast.

A historic town, National Historical Heritage since 1966 and planned to be recognized by  UNESCO as  “Heritage of Humanity”, Paraty receives visitors from all over the planet who seek this exotic combination between nature and history. Founded in 1640, and with approximately 30,000 inhabitants, and a total area of 917 km², the town developed as a commercial entrepôt, for the discharge of gold, diamonds and other riches coming from Minas Gerais and São Paulo, by the so-called Old Route of the Royal Road, or Gold Route. Even today we can walk in the mountains of the Atlantic Rainforest and see from close up the well-preserved original stone pavement built between the 17th and 19th centuries by slaves. The Perpetual Defender Fort, with its trenches, cannons of the Royal Guard and Powder House, was built in 1703 and currently shelters the Popular Traditions and Arts Center of Paraty.
